Graphite Squares
Graphite is a crystalline form of the element carbon. I used various kinds of graphite — pencil, liquid, powder — to create the black squares. The lines are screen printed over the graphite.
The lines represent time spent, a way of marking time, moving through life that, in a way, we hope might be orderly and tidy. In reality, though, life is messy and unpredictable.
The graphite is perhaps the void, the unknowable on which our small, yet imporatant, lives take place.
